On May 18, 2014, at 4:30 pm, Gimli RCMP responded to a call for missing canoers at Grindstone Provincial Park.
Police say that one canoe with two male occupants, aged 19 and 22, set out at 12:30pm. Windy conditions caused the ice on Lake Winnipeg to move in and block access to the shore. When the canoers had not returned, RCMP and the Canadian Coast Guard became engaged. RCMP report that the Canadian Coast Guard was able to maneuver through the ice and rescue the canoers.
No injuries were sustained in this incident.
