On June 4, 2014, just before 1:30pm, Steinbach RCMP were dispatched to a complainant of an impaired driver in La Broquerie, Manitoba. The complainant provided a vehicle description and licence plate number.
A short while later, RCMP intercepted the suspect vehicle on Highway 302 in the RM of Ste. Anne. The driver, a 71-year-old man from Richer, and his male passenger, 79, were found to be extremely intoxicated.
RCMP report that the male driver was arrested and transported to the Steinbach RCMP Detachment where breath tests were conducted. The driver’s blood alcohol concentration was measured at nearly three times the legal limit.
The accused has been released on a promise to appear in court on June 26, 2014. He has been charged under the Criminal Code with impaired driving and driving with a blood alcohol concentration over the legal limit. Additional charges under the Liquor and Gaming Control Act have also been laid in regards to open liquor found in the vehicle.
Steinbach RCMP would like to remind the public that impaired driving is the leading cause of criminal death in Canada. RCMP have made impaired driving enforcement a national priority and are continuously working to get impaired drivers off the road. The public is helping with this commitment by reporting impaired drivers to the police. Anyone who sees an impaired driver is asked to call 911 or your local RCMP Detachment.
