Member of Parliament Ted Falk was pleased to commemorate the 70th anniversary of D-Day and the Battle of Normandy at the Steinbach Cenotaph. He was accompanied by President of the Steinbach Legion, Keith Duncan and Corporal Glenn Syme.

“It is a source of enormous national pride that our men and women in uniform made the ultimate sacrifice to defend our values,” said MP Falk. “It was one of the greatest battles of the Second World War and a turning point in the world’s history.”

On June 6, 1944, known as D-Day, allied troops stormed German defences on the beaches of Normandy to open the way to Germany from the West. D-Day was one of Canada’s most significant and successful military engagements and a pivotal moment of the 20th century. D-Day and the campaign that followed in Normandy would help signal the beginning of the end of the Second World War.

“I know that I speak for the residents of Provencher when I say that it is truly a privilege to live in a country that embraces freedom, democracy and the rule of law,” said MP Falk. “We must be forever grateful for those who have and continue to defend our way of life.”

To commemorate this important historical milestone Prime Minister Stephen Harper led a Canadian delegation to France to participate in events commemorating the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
