This coming weekend, June 14 and 15, a licence won’t be needed to fish in Manitoba and the provincial park entry fee is waived as well. This announcement was made by Conservation and Water Stewardship Minister Gord Mackintosh.
“There are endless fishing opportunities in our province,” said Minister Mackintosh. “I want Manitobans to go fishing and create wonderful memories with family and friends, and enjoy the beauty and bounty of our many lakes and rivers.”
Summer family fishing weekends have been offered since 1992. On June 14 and 15, anglers will be able to fish without a licence provincewide, except in national parks where a federal licence is still required. In addition, there is no entry fee to visit provincial parks this weekend.
Anglers fishing without a licence will be allowed to keep a conservation limit of fish, which varies by species. All other rules and regulations will apply, as outlined in the 2014 Manitoba Anglers’ Guide.
In recognition of the free family fishing weekend, the Manitoba Wildlife Federation is hosting an amateur photo contest to promote fishing as a fun family leisure activity.
“We want families to share valuable time together and enjoy all that Manitoba has to offer,” said Carly Deacon, program manager, Manitoba Wildlife Federation. “Anglers can capture those special moments and submit their photos to info@mwf.mb.ca by June 16 for a chance to win great prizes.”
