Almost a dozen health care students from throughout the region have some extra money for their studies after recently receiving bursaries from organizations throughout South Eastman Health.

On November 3, eleven students received a combined $6,500 to further their health care education. While distributed at South Eastman Health’s annual general meeting, the bursaries are actually contributed to from four regional foundations and auxiliaries, as well as the regional health authority.

Aurèle Boisvert, chair of the board for South Eastman Health says the selection of qualified students gets harder each year.

“We continue to see an increase in the number of individuals submitting applications for these bursaries,” stated Boisvert. “Nonetheless, we are very pleased to be able to assist some of our residents who are pursuing their studies in a health related field.”

For the first time, the regional health authority sponsored two bursaries instead of just one. Sarah Plett received $1,000 towards her third year in Bachelor of Nursing while Irina Woronzow received $500 for obtaining her Medical Receptionist diploma.

The Bethesda Regional Health Care Auxiliary awarded two bursaries in the amount of $750 each to Mbonisi Magonya who is in his second year of nursing, and Shaun Lysak who is enrolled in the Ultrasound Training Program at the Health Sciences Centre.

The Fondation Centre médico-social DeSalaberry Health Centre Foundation Inc. awarded a $500 bursary each to Jacqueline Bugera who is pursuing her studies in Human Nutritional Sciences at the University of Manitoba and Melanie Forest who is in her first year at the U of  M Faculty of Nursing.

Michelle St. Hilaire received a $500 bursary from the Fonds Hôpital Ste. Anne Hospital Fund to continue her studies in nursing at the Collège universitaire de Saint-Boniface.

Four bursaries in the amount of $500 each were awarded by the Niverville Health and Community Foundation to Deanna Cook who is in her third year at the U of M Faculty of Medicine; and three nursing students including Eileen Buys, Juliana Harris, and Stephanie Goertzen.

The Board of South Eastman Health utilizes the bursary program as a means to encourage local health care students to graduate and then hopefully practice in the region.
