Ted Falk, Member of Parliament for Provencher has released a statement regarding Bill C-36.
“Yesterday I was pleased to see that the Senate of Canada passed Bill C-36, the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act.
Bill C-36, a made in Canada model, makes the buying and advertising of sexual services illegal and directly targets the demand for prostitution by taking tough action against pimps and johns.
The Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act will protect our communities – in particular women, children, and those who are at risk of being drawn into prostitution – from the dangers associated with prostitution, including violence, drug-related crime, and organized crime.
We are also committed to protecting Canadian communities by making it illegal to sell sexual services in or near any public place where children could be present.
These measures will be supported by $20 million in new funding, including support to grassroots organizations dealing with the most vulnerable prostitutes. Recognizing that the overwhelming majority of prostitutes are looking to leave this dangerous and harmful line of work, there will be an emphasis on funding programs with a proven record of helping prostitutes exit the sex trade.
Having been adopted by the Senate of Canada, Bill C-36 is expected to receive Royal Assent shortly. The provisions of the Bill will come into force 30 days after Royal Assent, meeting the December 19, 2014 deadline set by the Supreme Court of Canada.”
