As the ice continues to melt on waterways around the province, local authorities want to remind the public that melting ice and open water can create a dangerous situation very quickly.
The best strategy is to stay off the ice. The following safety tips are to help ensure anyone who finds themselves on the ice can get home safely:
- Closely supervise children when in proximity of any body of water. Remind your children to stay away from ditches, creeks, ponds, rivers and lakes
- Avoid riding snowmobiles or ATVs on waterways
- Advise someone where you are going and when you will be back
- Always travel with someone on the ice, but do not travel too close together in case the ice does break
- Take a cell phone and store it in a waterproof container
- Save your alcohol for the shore so you can be alert and aware when on the ice
