The Mayor of Steinbach is encouraging all those employed in the downtown area to kickoff the festival weekend by walking or riding bike to work this Friday, June 19, 2009.
“Not only is this a great choice for both health and environmental reasons,” said Mayor Goertzen, “but it will also aid in smooth traffic operations on Main Street for Steinbach’s first Summer in the City Festival kickoff.”
Festival Coordinator, Melissa Perkins tells employees, storeowners, and residents, “Friday will be a great day to walk downtown and buy lunch or snacks out on the street. What beats bringing some museum waffles, cotton candy, or samosas back to the office! We don’t have access to this kind of food fare and variety every day, so enjoy!”
Main Street, from Friesen Avenue to Lumber Avenue, will be closed to traffic from Friday morning to Saturday night as a result of festival activities and displays. Numerous kiosks will be set up offering a wide variety of food, activities for both adults and kids, and first-rate demonstrations and entertainment.
“This will be a great opportunity for our citizens and businesses to showcase our progressive and growing city,” said Mayor Goertzen. “Walking or cycling to work is not only a healthy choice, but will make our downtown more accessible for those visiting our city.”
