Manitoba’s speech from the throne was delivered recently with an emphasis on how the province is well positioned to weather the global economic downturn. While there were no new announcements specific to stabilizing producers’ incomes, there were commitments to work on issues including protecting wetlands, research and innovation, infrastructure upgrades, the development of Manitoba’s inland port, and food safety.

“KAP looks forward to working with the provincial government on food safety to ensure continued consumer confidence in Canadian agricultural products,” said KAP Vice President Robert McLean. “We encourage the government to move forward and ensure producers don’t bear unfair costs related to carrying out food safety initiatives.”

KAP is pleased the province is looking at new incentives for land owners to manage wetlands under the new Wetlands Protection and Restoration Initiative. The announcement builds on the initiatives carried out in the Alternative Land Use Services (ALUS) project, and that is a positive step for producers. The speech also noted the province will launch a new Sustainable Agricultural Program, and KAP is eager to see more details on the government’s plans.

Though there were few details in the announcement regarding the Manitoba Council on Innovation, KAP is encouraged to see the province put a priority on science and innovation projects, and looks forward to seeing agricultural research targeted.

On the issue of transportation, KAP believes the announcement on upgrades to highways is a positive step, but more must be done. “Increased investment in Manitoba’s rural transportation networks is critical—specifically investments in roads—and we encourage the government to allocate more dollars to infrastructure,” said McLean.

The government also reaffirmed its commitment to investing in CentrePort Canada – Manitoba’s inland port, and KAP supports putting dollars into new initiatives such as this to increase trade.
