After taking the Winnipeg Jets Mark Scheifele and Michael Hutchinson, as well as Olympic Gold Medalist Dara Howell, on the ride of their lives, Canadian race car driver and Niverville native David Richert is heading back to Europe for this weekend’s Formula Renault race at Nurburgring in Germany.
During the short mid-summer break, Richert spent time at home in Canada where he recently took the two young NHL standouts for a ride around Gimli Motorsport Park in support of KidSport Winnipeg. Apart from just going for a ride, Scheifele and Hutchinson also spent time behind the wheel as Richert coached them around the race track.
“It was crazy”, said a smiling Mark Scheifele after his ride with Richert, “I was just holding on and I was hoping I wouldn’t throw up, that was my main focus.”
With the summer break now over, the Formula Renault Northern European Cup resumes this weekend as 25 young drivers from 18 different countries take to the legendary Nurburgring race circuit in Germany. Richert, Canada’s lone representative in this weekend’s event, is excited to get back to racing. “I’m looking forward to climbing back into the race car and pushing myself as far as I can,” said Richert. “It always takes a few laps to get used to the feeling of driving again after a break, but I’m hoping Inter Europol Competition and I will be ready to finish the season with some good results.”
