Charolais cattle had a huge presence at the Manitoba Livestock Expo this year, with the National Charolais Show attracting a large number of impressive animals, so it might not come as a surprise to some that the Charolais were able to secure top honours among all the champions at the East Man Feed’s Supreme Breed Extravaganza.

Bert McDonald of JMB Charolais, from Brookdale won the Supreme Breed Extravaganza Champion Female with JMB McKenna 615S.

Carman Jackson of High Bluff Stock Farms from Inglis won the Supreme Breed Extravaganza Champion Bull with HBSF Specialist 108U.

“It’s pretty nice to win it here in Manitoba. We’ve been here for quite a few years, so it’s a big honour for me.” says McDonald.

“Oh it’s definitely an honour, especially to win with a bull calf,” says Jackson. “To have our peers recognize the quality of our Charolais breed. It’s also been a while since Charolais have won, so it’s great to receive this recognition.”

Both winners were very happy with the Manitoba Livestock Expo, as well as the Keystone Center facility; “The facilities here are unbelievable… the exhibitors from Alberta that are here just can’t believe that we have such a great facility. We’ve shown from Toronto to Edmonton, and this is the best facility in Canada. People from out of town just can’t believe we can walk from the hotel room straight into the barns.”

When asked how they felt about the future of cattle farming in Canada, the exhibitors suggest attending the many junior shows at the Manitoba Livestock Expo to see first hand the knowledge and skill of young cattle farmers. “It will be pretty impressive. That’s why I got my kids involved with the junior shows,” says Jackson. “They learn a lot and there are some great shows.”
