Agricultural societies throughout Manitoba will share $94,500 in provincial grants to help with the cost of maintenance and upgrades to agricultural facilities and fair grounds, Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk announced.
“Agricultural societies provide a valuable educational bridge between country and city life, introducing producers to consumers and demonstrating the bond between farm-fresh and value-added products,” said Wowchuk. “These organizations support and encourage the exhibitions and fairs that are key entertainment and social events for rural and urban communities and an excellent opportunity to showcase volunteers contributing to their communities with homegrown competitions and displays.”
Throughout Manitoba, there are 59 agricultural societies that can apply for funding for projects that address infrastructure and the continued success of the many community programs held at their sites. Projects include painting and repairing barns, grandstands and bleachers; signage; upgrades to show rings; enhancements to fair grounds; and the purchase of specialized equipment.
“Agricultural societies and local fairs depend heavily on volunteers and community support to keep these events alive on minimal budgets,” said the minister. “We are proud to support their efforts and help keep their grounds and facilities in good repair so they can continue to attract events and appreciative audiences to their communities.”
