On July 27, 2009, at approximately 2pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a call of a person trapped inside a house fire in the RM of Portage la Prairie near Southport.

Police arrived on scene along with Portage Ambulance. The caretaker discovered the fire and was able to get out of the house on her own, however, another woman remained trapped inside.

The fire department was not yet on scene so a Portage la Prairie RCMP constable entered the residence and attempted to help the trapped woman escape, however, the smoke was too thick and was forced to exit the residence. Portage Fire Department arrived soon after and entered the house and rescued the woman and extinguished the fire.

The police constable and resident suffered smoke inhalation and were transported along with the caretaker to Portage General Hospital to be examined.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and there is no damage estimate.

The incident is still under investigation with the assistance of the Office of the Fire Commissioner.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious.
