The World’s Largest Truck Convoy® is a project of the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR) working in conjunction with members of the trucking industry in order to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics.
The local event will take place this year on Saturday, September 12, 2009. Participants will meet in Oak Bluff at 11am and will convoy counterclockwise around the Perimeter Highway. Upon their return to Oak Bluff, the participants will be welcomed by Special Olympics athletes, family, friends, members of the Law Enforcement Torch Run organizing committee, colleagues and law enforcement members for lunch. A short program and activities including Special Olympics athletes will follow.
Since its inception in 2001, the World’s Largest Truck Convoy® has become a one-day celebration of the trucking industry to help raise money for Special Olympics. Norm Schneiderhan, a Corporal with the Orange County (Florida) Sheriff’s Department, created this event which is largely attributed to the impact Special Olympics has had on him as a LETR participant and his family connection to the trucking industry.
Since 2001, the event has raised approximately $2 million in Canada and the U.S. for Special Olympics. In 2008, in excess of $694,000 was raised in 39 convoy events across six Canadian Provinces and 29 U.S. States.
Members of the Media are invited to attend the event in support of our Special Olympics Athletes.
The Law Enforcement Torch Run began in 1981 in Wichita, Kansas and has grown into the largest worldwide fundraiser for Special Olympics.
