On September 6, 2009 at about 5:30am, RCMP Lac du Bonnet Detachment were called from a camper at the Big Whiteshell Provincial Campground advising that they had heard sounds from the water which was believed to be a person in distress.

Upon attendance by the RCMP, it was learned that similar sounds were heard by other campers and cottagers in the area.

That morning at about 7am, a canoe was found near the South Shore of Big Whiteshell Lake in the Whiteshell Provincial Park with nobody in the area . The canoe was found submerged  with a few personal effects around the canoe.

RCMP are patrolling the Lake with the RCMP boat to ascertain if someone did drown with the assistance of the Winnipeg Police Service Underwater Search and Recovery Unit.

Assistance has also been provided by Manitoba Conservation throughout this investigation.

RCMP Lac du Bonnet is also following up on a report of a missing 20-year-old man from Winnipeg that appears to be related. His name will not be released at the family’s request.
