On September 15, 2009, shortly after 4pm, RCMP and the RM of Springfield Fire Department responded to a collision between a Semi and a train at the crossing near Wenzel Street on the North Perimeter (101) in the RM of Springfield.
RCMP in attendance were RCMP Headingley Traffic Services, RCMP Oakbank and RCMP East St. Paul Detachments.
The male driver, a 65-year-old from Winnipeg, was extricated from the Semi using the Jaws of Life. He was taken to the Health Sciences Centre by ambulance in stable condition.
RCMP learned that the train was entering the crossing heading south as the crossing lights were activated. Approximately 4 or 5 vehicles were stopped at the train crossing when the Semi traveling westbound took evasive action to the left lane and hit the Central Manitoba Railway train.
The Semi was hauling peat moss at the time of the collision. Damage to the Semi is extensive. The train derailed from the collision.
Alcohol is not considered a factor in this collision. The investigation into what lead to this collision continues.
Police are requesting that road users in this area respect and adhere to the road blockages for road safety and worker safety.
The westbound lane from Gunn Road to Wenzel Street will remain closed until about noon today.
