D Division Traffic Services has observed that following a decline in the number of fatal vehicle collisions from 2005 to 2008, the number of fatal collisions for 2009 is increasing.
Single vehicle rollover collisions where the driver or passenger is not wearing a seatbelt or helmet continue to be a major contributing factor in these fatalities, most often with the person being ejected from the vehicle.
Of the 59 fatal collisions reported to date for 2009, there have been 23 (39%) single vehicle rollover fatal collisions, 19 of which had occupants who were not wearing seatbelts or helmets. The lack of use of the seatbelts or helmets contributed to the seriousness of the injuries resulting in death. Of these collisions, nine also involved the use of alcohol or drugs by the driver.
Drivers are reminded that use of seatbelts while operating motor vehicles, and helmets while operating motorcycles, all terrain vehicles and snowmobiles, often reduces the seriousness of the injuries sustained should you be involved in a single vehicle rollover or any other type of collision.
