On October 2, 2009, at about 9am, a Carberry RCMP officer was conducting a traffic stop after a vehicle was observed speeding at 147 KPH west bound on Hwy 1, one mile west of Douglas, Manitoba.
Police noted a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle and the occupants were arrested for being in possession of marijuana.
The subsequent search of the vehicle revealed the two adult male occupants were in possession of 106 grams of marijuana, over $2,000 in cash, 2 large canisters of bear spray repellent and a hatchet concealed as weapon.
Both men from Winnipeg, were released on their own recognizance to appear in Brandon court on November 12th, 2009, for the following charges: speeding, possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a prohibited weapon and possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace.
The value of the seized marijuana is estimated at $2,120.
Police would like to remind the public that the purchase and possession of bear spray must be used for the purpose of repelling bears, and not as weapons of self defense or offensive use against humans.
Drug use is not believed to be a factor in the speeding charge.
The two men’s names will not be released until charges are laid by police later this week.
