Infrastructure and Transportation Minister Ron Lemieux today announced that Greyhound and the Province of Manitoba will continue to work on a resolution to keep bus transportation active in Manitoba, however, he said a reduction in future service is likely.
“We are pleased that Greyhound has agreed to work on options to keep buses running in the province despite the significant financial challenges facing the company,” said Lemieux. “We are committed to develop made-in-Manitoba options in the short term and we will continue to impress upon the federal government that national support is needed to fully maintain the level of service that currently exists in our province and across the country.”
The minister met yesterday, Oct. 27, with senior Greyhound officials following a federal‑provincial‑territorial meeting in Vancouver on Oct. 22. Both the province and Greyhound agreed to continue discussions on Greyhound’s future in Manitoba.
“We have full co-operation from Greyhound and it has the same from the province,” said Lemieux. “I look forward to our discussions and I am confident we can come to a reasonable resolution that works for both Greyhound and the citizens of Manitoba.”
The minister noted that as a gesture of good faith, Greyhound has agreed to continue selling tickets past Nov. 2, 2009.
