On November 17, 2009, at around 3pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP responded to a motor vehicle – train collision on 3rd Street North East in the City of Portage la Prairie.

Investigation revealed that a 2006 Honda Civic was traveling North bound on 3rd Street N.E. in Portage la Prairie when it was struck by a West bound C.N. freight train.

The scene was attended by Portage la Prairie RCMP, C.N. Police, Emergency Services, and ambulance.

The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Portage la Prairie, was transported to Portage General Hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries. There were no passengers.

The railway crossing was closed to traffic for about an hour while the scene was examined, and C.N. crews were on hand to ensure the safety of the crossing prior to it’s re-opening to traffic.

Witnesses report signal lights and control arms were in operation at the time and alcohol is not considered a factor.

RCMP remind motorists and pedestrians of the dangers of level railway crossings and to always be mindful of signals and watch for approaching trains at these crossings.

RCMP and C.N. Police continue to investigate.
