On November 18, 2009, at about 5pm, Portage la Prairie RCMP, Emergency Services, and Ambulance responded to a report of a motor vehicle – semi trailer collision on the Trans Canada Highway near Can Oats Road in Portage la Prairie.

Investigation revealed that a 2009 Ford Fusion being driven by a 87-year-old man from St. Claude collided with a transport truck hauling round bales. Both vehicles were east bound on the Trans Canada Highway. The Ford Fusion was in the passing lane overtaking the semi when it made contact with the side of the trailer. The driver lost control and the vehicle spun into the median ditch.

The driver and a female passenger of theĀ  Ford Fusion were transported to Portage la Prairie Regional Hospital where they were treated for non life threatening injuries. The driver of the semi was not injured, and the highway remained open to traffic.

Charges are pending under the Highway Traffic Act and RCMP continue to investigate.
