On November 28, 2009, around 8:20am, RCMP Virden Detachment were advised of an individual who had been out hunting and had been shot in the right calf.

Investigation has revealed that three adult males, two from Virden and one from Brandon, were in the RM of Pipestone, approximately 4 km from Cromer, hunting deer together. They returned to their vehicle and the 24 year-old-male from Virden thought he had emptied the .308 caliber rifle, but as he was putting the weapon into the vehicle it discharged and the bullet struck the 27-year-old Virden resident in the calf of the right leg.

The victim was taken by the hunting party to the Virden Hospital where he was transported to Brandon and then onto Health Science Center for further treatment. The wound is not considered life threatening.

The investigation continues with charges under the criminal code being considered.
