In cooperation with the Norway House Cree Nation Chief and Council, the RCMP Commercial Crime Section conducted a year long investigation which revealed that between 2003 and 2008, in excess of $1,000,000 was stolen from the Norway House Cree Nation Band.
The investigation showed that band funds were transferred and deposited into unauthorized accounts.
On December 9, 2009, 33-year-old Kimberly Apetagon of Norway House, who was the former Norway House Cree Nation Band’s Payroll Administrator, was arrested and has been charged with:
• Fraud over $1,000,000
• Theft over $1,000,000
• Possess property obtained by crime over $5,000
• Laundering proceeds of crime over $5,000.00
• Falsify books and documents
• Destroy books and documents
In addition 35-year-old Stephen Apetagon of Norway House Cree Nation, spouse of Kimberly Apetagon, has also been charged with:
• Theft over $5,000
• Possess property obtained by crime over $5,000
• Laundering proceeds of crime over $5,000
Both have been released on recognizance with conditions and are scheduled to appear in Norway House Provincial Court on January 19, 2010.
