On December 13, 2009 at about 3:10am, an off-duty RCMP Headingley Traffic Services member came across a single vehicle collision involving a passenger van on the Perimeter Highway (101) just south of Wilkes Avenue.

The off-duty officer summoned for assistance from the Headingley Rural Detachment, as the driver, a 33-year-old woman from the RM of McDonald, was under the influence of alcohol.

While dealing with the driver and the collision, traffic had to be stopped in the north-bound lane.

About 20 minutes later, a Ford Explorer, driven by a 22-year-old man from the Winnipeg area, rear-ended a semi stopped who was waiting to get by the first collision scene. The driver of the Ford Explorer was transported to the Health Sciences Centre and suffered serious injuries. He was last reported in stable condition at the Health Sciences Centre. The Explorer sustained extensive front end damage.  The driver of the semi was not hurt in the collision.

The woman driving the van will be facing charges of impaired driving and driving while over .08. Her readings were reportedly twice the legal limit.

Speed is considered a contributing factor in the second collision involving the 22-year-old driver.

Both collisions remain under investigation.
