On December 19, 2009 at about 2am, Steinbach RCMP were informed of a fatal collision between a pedestrian and a semi-tractor trailer on the westbound lane of Highway 1 near Richer, Manitoba.

Investigation revealed that a semi-tractor pulling a trailer, driven by a 52-year-old man, was traveling westbound on Highway 1 when a man walking eastbound in the westbound lane stepped out in front of the semi-tractor’s path. The driver of the semi-tractor swerved to the left in attempts to avoid the pedestrian, however, the right side of the semi-tractor struck the deceased. The driver lost control of the semi-tractor and then collided with the deceased’s vehicle parked on the side of the road.

84-year-old Joseph Sliskovic of Thunder Bay, Ontario was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.

The driver of the semi-tractor was not injured.

Alcohol is not considered a factor in the accident.
