The Olympic Torch may have passed through Steinbach, but the healthy spirit of sport and competition is still here and gearing up for the 2010 Safeway Men’s Provincial Curling Championship.
February 10–14th, thirty-two of the Province’s top curling teams will take to the ice at the T.G. Smith Centre to determine who will represent Manitoba at the Canadian Brier. This is a rare opportunity for local curling fans to see Jeff Stoughton, Kerry Burtnyk or maybe even Vic Peters in action.
Curling fans can now get their tickets for the full 5-day event at the Steinbach Safeway Store on Hwy. 12 North. The pass costs $65, and includes admission into the Arena, reserved seating for the entire event, as well as admission into the T.G. Smith Arena each day to take in the local entertainment. Once the event is underway, only single day and single draw tickets will be sold, and reserved seating will not be available.
In 2006, this prestigious event was hosted by Steinbach for the first time, and was a resounding success. Over a period of 4 days, the Centennial Arena was transformed by volunteers from a hockey rink to a 5-sheet curling venue, and 400 extra seats were added. The T.G. Smith Arena became the hospitality venue, as food and beverage services were brought in, tables and chairs added, and a stage set up for entertainment.
The Centennial Arena was full for most of the 17 draws and, at times, reached its capacity of 1600 spectators. Thanks to the tremendous corporate support, the fan turnout, and the outstanding efforts of over 300 volunteers, the event was again offered to Steinbach for 2010. This year should be better than ever.
Volunteers are still needed to help at this event. Volunteer forms are available at www.curlmanitoba.org/competitions or people can call Peter at 326-6524 or Wayne at 377-4990.
