Police are advising the public to be cautious of suspicious callers enquiring about their credit card information or related credit status.

Police have received information from the public where callers have sought out this information to update their files, purportedly representing a credit card company. Should you receive this type of call, do not reveal any information and immediately request the callers name, phone number, company being represented and a contact person to verify who the caller is. If this information is not provided, report the call to the local police as well as Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501 or Recol.ca.

Police are also cautioning the public to be aware of a phone scam where the caller advises the person that a family member has been involved in an out of town accident and money (usually substantial) must be wired to an unspecified account to allow the injured person to return home. The callers have been quite persistent in pressuring the person to attend a money mart type business to wire the money.

Anyone receiving this type of phone call is urged not provide any personal information to the caller nor to send and money to an unknown account. Immediately obtain the name / number of the caller, reporting the matter to police and Phone Busters at 1-888-495-8501 or Recol.ca.
