Skating rink

Shamattawa youth enjoy the new skating rink built be RCMP detachment members.

RCMP members living in Shamattawa and other remote communities in Manitoba are well aware that there are many challenges living in a remote northern community, not the least of which is limited recreational activities.

Detachment members recently flooded a skating rink by drilling holes in the ice with an ice auger, a generator and a fire hose to water the ice surface. After each snowfall, the RCMP members scrape the ice off with shovels.

Currently, the RCMP Shamattawa members assisted by the D Division RCMP Community and Aboriginal Policing Services are in the process of collecting donated skates, helmets, pucks and hockey sticks from RCMP employees and other interagency partners for dissemination to this community.  The response, from RCMP staff, various agencies and their staff and families has been tremendous.  Members in Shamattawa have not stopped there, in an effort to build relationships with area youth, Sgt. Noel Allard and detachment members hold weekly barbeques for the children.

Most recently, aboriginal young people and their families were special guests of the Manitoba Moose, the RCMP and First Nations and Inuit Health Branch (FNIHB) of Health Canada for the 10th annual “Follow Your Dreams” night February 13th at the MTS Center in Winnipeg, where they enjoyed watching the Manitoba Moose take on the Toronto Marlies.  About 55 children from Shamattawa First Nation were able to attend.

“The interaction between police and youth through these activities is inspiring and demonstrates that collectively the efforts of a few compassionate citizens can make a profound difference within a community” said Inspector Tyler Bates, Officer in Charge of the RCMP Community and Aboriginal Policing Services.
