Manitobans are encouraged to join individuals, organizations and communities around the world in celebrating international Earth Hour 2010, Conservation Minister Bill Blaikie said.

“The Province of Manitoba will be participating in this initiative by turning off interior lights in both urban and rural provincial buildings,” said Blaikie. “Provincial employees are being asked to turn off computer monitors and lights in workspaces before leaving at the end of the week.”

From 8:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Saturday, March 27, everyone all over the world is being invited to turn off their lights for one hour to show that it’s possible to take personal and corporate action on climate change.

“The Earth Hour global sustainability movement is an example of simple but effective action that can be taken to make a difference in the world,” said Blaikie.

Originating in Sydney, Australia, in 2007, Earth Hour has since gained international attention.

More information can be found at earthhour.org where individuals can sign up to participate at home.
