Tax season is looming and every business wants to make it as painless and profitable as possible. The Providence College Business Initiative will be hosting a workshop to assist family-business and small-business owners in the region. The Trimming Taxes workshop will be held on January 26th in Winnipeg.
“The Providence Business Initiative started two years ago. We prepare young people to be business professionals at Providence, but also to be of service to those already in the business community,” said Bruce Duggan, coordinator for the Providence Business Initiative.
The workshop is just one way that Providence is fulfilling their desire to be a valuable resource for the community. “The Providence Business Initiative is an important part of the way in which we are reaching out to provide support for people in our communities,” said Providence President, Gus Konkel,
Trimming Taxes is held in cooperation with the Royal Bank of Canada. The workshop is bringing together experts in accounting, law, investment, and banking to give tips and strategies on minimizing this year’s tax payout – and minimizing tax payouts in the future. It is not a workshop on avoiding taxes through loopholes or shady practices. The goal of the workshop is to give legal, ethical advice about ways to reduce the cost of taxes to a business.
“We wanted to host this workshop because we are aware that businesses want to pay the minimum that is required on their taxes. And, because if a businessperson went to a lawyer, an accountant, an investment advisor, and a banker for tax advice, they might get four different answers. It leaves businesspeople wondering, who am I supposed to listen to? We decided to bring together a representative from each of those fields to present options for saving money on taxes, both this year and in the long term,” said Duggan.
The presenters at the event include: Mona Brown, LLB of Smith Neufeld Jodion; Sarah Neufeld, CGA at Meyers Norris Penny; Douglas Kerr, an FMA Investment Advisor for RBC Dominion Securities; and Roy Enns, Account Manager at RBC Steinbach.
The event will be held on Monday, January 26, 2009 from 9 a.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the Holiday Inn South, 1330 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg, MB. The cost for the workshop is $125. Providence is offering a discount of $25 to all who have attended a previous Providence College Business Initiative workshop. For more information, visit prov.ca/events.
