Manitoba Hydro has received numerous calls over the last several weeks from concerned customers regarding phone solicitations from a company purporting to offer a device that could save them up to 40 percent on their electricity bills. In some circumstances, the phone solicitors are also masquerading as Manitoba Hydro staff and indicate that the device has been approved by Manitoba Hydro. Some customers also report that the callers have been asking for credit card numbers.

Manitoba Hydro has not approved of such a device and advises all customers to exercise appropriate caution and due diligence if they are contacted by anyone selling energy savings devices.

In addition, these devices have not been approved by the Canadian Standards Association (CSA) or CSA International. This means that the devices may not comply with relevant standards for safety and performance.

If you do receive phone calls of this nature, please report them immediately to PhoneBusters – the Canadian anti-fraud call centre – at 1-888-495-8501 or through their website at www.phonebusters.com.
