Initial reports indicate that a patient at the hospital had become assaultive with a member of the Winkler Police Service while awaiting a medical assessment. The patient had been brought to the hospital by the Winkler Police Service prior to the incident.
The Patient, a 23-year-old male from the Gretna area, assaulted and disarmed the Winkler Police officer. A struggle ensued, and the officer was able to regain control of the firearm. While members from the RCMP were still en route, the patient continued to fight with the Winkler Police Officer.
