Altona RCMP are requesting the public’s assistance in relation to several calls for service relating to dead and injured animals in the RM of Rhineland.
On Friday March 5, 2010, RCMP were summoned to a veterinary clinic where 2 dogs who suffered grave injury were brought for treatment. The first dog suffered a burn roughly the size of a grapefruit/fist through it’s fur and thorax muscles. The sides of the burn were seared and caused tremendous damage. So much so the dog had to be euthanized. At that time, police were notified of another dog belonging to the same person that was brought to the veterinarian four days previous with serious injury. This dog suffered 2 lacerations to it’s underside. The cuts were deep and the vet advised that they were caused by something sharp. That dog survived.
The owner advised both dogs had been getting out of her yard in the previous days leading up till that date. Despite having a 6′ fence surrounding the yard, large snow drifts allowed the animals to escape. They always returned home. Both injured dogs were located in their owner’s yard who promptly bought them to the vet. It does not appear there was anything on the owner’s yard/property that could have caused similar injury to the dogs. It is unknown how these injuries were caused.
On the same day, RCMP were summoned to a location south west of Highways 14 and 306. A local resident who traverses that road by foot on a frequent basis called police as a result of a peculiar find. He observed two animals that had been skinned. They had no fur, save for “socks” on the bottom of each leg. The socks were white/orange
in color and the second’s were black/brown socks. Neither had tails attached. It appears they’d been tossed over the bridge and were laying on top of the snow. The witness advised he is accustomed to seeing deer carcasses and garbage tossed over this bridge, but not animals such as this.
On Thursday March 25, 2010, an animal control officer contacted Altona RCMP on behalf of the Pembina Valley Humane Society. A dog was brought to their shelter that appeared malnourished. Further, the dog was found with bailer twine wrapped/tied around it’s body and attached to the twine, a jug full of rocks. The dog wandered into a yard and these residents brought the dog to the shelter. The dog had gone missing approximately 2 days previous from a yard on the boundaries of RM Rhineland/Morris, north of Horndean. Investigation revealed this dog was a pet that had recently gone missing. The owners were actively attempting to locate the dog when they heard on the radio of a dog matching it’s description being brought to the shelter. Investigation revealed the dog appeared malnourished but was in fact just “skinny” from having recently nursed 10 puppies.
If anyone has any information on these cases or any similar occurrences please call the Altona RCMP at 324-6970 or your local law enforcement agency.
