On May 1, 2010 at about 10:15pm, RCMP Portage la Prairie members were on patrol on Long Plain FN when they discovered a residence engulfed in flames.

A man and his two children, a 5-year-old boy and his 4-year-old sister were outside the residence. RCMP contacted the Long Plain Fire Department and arrived within minutes. The Fire Department located a 2-year-old boy inside the house. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation was initiated. As the child was being transported by ambulance to the hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.

RCMP learned that the father had, prior to police arrival, gone back into the burning house for the missing child but could not find him. The father is currently in hospital in stable condition. Both surviving children have been released from hospital.

RCMP, with the assistance of the Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner and the Medical Examiner, continue to investigate what caused the fire.

A post mortem is scheduled to take place at the Health Sciences Centre on May 3, 2010.

The investigation continues.
