On May 25, 2010, at 9:37pm, Virden RCMP received a report of a knife stabbing on Wellington Street East in Virden, Manitoba.

Investigation revealed that a 19-year-old male from Oak Lake had been stabbed with a knife (13 inches in length) by a 20-year-old male from Virden. There had been an argument between the two males that had been going on verbally for some period of time throughout the evening. The argument continued to escalate to the point where it became physical. During the physical altercation the 19-year-old suffered a knife wound to his lower mid back. The 20-year-old left the residence prior to police arriving.

The wound was significantly deep and the victim had to be transported to Brandon General Hospital for further treatment. The wound is not life threatening. 

On route to the incident RCMP observed the individual who had been identified as being responsible and he was put in police custody.

20-year-old Damien Wonnop of Virden has been charged with assault with a weapon, assault causing bodily harm and possession of a weapon for the purpose of committing an offence.

Wonnop is currently in custody at the Brandon Correction Institute and will make a court appearance in Brandon this afternoon.
