On June 15, 2010, at approximately 5am, a Canada Post employee, who was passing by, observed smoke coming from a window at the Ethelbert RCMP Detachment, which consists of an office and attached living quarters.
Local fire and emergency services attended and encountered heavy smoke. There was one detachment member in the residence at the time of the fire. RCMP report that the quarters were evacuated and no one was injured.
The fire was contained to the interior of the office area of the building, which is reported to have sustained substantial fire damage. The living quarters sustained some smoke damage.
There were no staff or prisoners in the Detachment at the time of the fire.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Manitoba Office of the Fire Commissioner has been advised, and will be attending to assist with the investigation.
