On July 4, 2010, at 3pm, Sprague RCMP were called to an unsupervised beach at Moose Lake Provincial Park where a male swimmer had gone under water and could not be located.
 
Investigation revealed that a 22-year-old male challenged another male to a race to the markers surrounding the beach. The markers were located approximately 15 metres from shore in 8 feet of water. When the swimmer reached the markers, he was not able to swim back or keep his head above the water due to exhaustion, at this point he went under the water.

The swimmer was located approximately 15 minutes later With assistance from other people at the beach. CPR was initiated, however he could not be resuscitated.     
 
Alcohol is not a factor in the incident.

The name of the 22-year-old male has been identified as Shane Christofferson of the RM of Piney, Manitoba
