Steinbach MLA Kelvin Goertzen says he is pleased with a meeting he had Monday with Manitoba Education Minister Peter Bjornson to discuss the need for new schools in the Hanover School Division but adds there needs to be specific announcements soon from the NDP government.
“I was satisfied that there is an understanding and an appreciation by the Minister about the overcrowding and pressure being placed on our local schools as a result of growth. I think he recognizes that the need for new school infrastructure is as great here as any place in the province. Obviously my goal is to turn that recognition into action,” said Goertzen.
Goertzen met with Minister Bjornson Monday afternoon at the Manitoba Legislature to specifically outline the need for new schools in the region. It included discussion on moving quickly to build the already approved middle school in Steinbach and the need for another regional High School in the area.
“We have had some success in getting approval for the middle school but that has to move from the approval stage to getting the school built quickly. As well, there has to be additional schools approved and built just to keep pace with current growth,” said Goertzen.
Goertzen said he appreciated the one on one meeting with the Minister and will be following up on his discussion after the provincial budget is released.
