On January 28, 2009 at around 8:00pm RCMP Selkirk responded to a two vehicle collision at the intersection of Highway 59 and Highway 304 in the RM of St. Clements.
A Plymouth Voyageur van traveling westbound on Highway 304 containing three occupants collided with a Dodge Neon traveling northbound on Highway 59 also containing three occupants. The RM of St. Clements East Beaches Fire Dept. And Selkirk EMS attended the scene.
Two female passengers of the Dodge Neon ages 18 and 19-years-old of the Community of Black River, Mb were pronounced deceased at the scene. The 35-year-old woman driver of the Dodge Neon also of Black River was transported to the Selkirk & District General Hospital in non-life threatening condition.
A 27-year-old man from Scanterbury, Mb who was an occupant of the Plymouth Voyageur was arrested and is currently in custody. The Plymouth Voyageur Van had been reported stolen from the City of Winnipeg by the Winnipeg Police Service. A 24-year-old man from Scanterbury, Mb and a 29-year-old woman from Winnipeg, Mb who were also occupants of the Plymouth Voyageur were taken to the Winnipeg Health Sciences Centre with non-life threatening injuries.
Alcohol is believed to be a factor and the investigation is ongoing. The RCMP Grand Marais and Powerview Detachments are assisting along with the RCMP Winnipeg Major Crimes Unit, Winnipeg Forensic Identification Unit and Selkirk Traffic Services.
Update 01/30/09:
The 27-year-old man taken into custody on January 28, 2009 by RCMP Selkirk has been identified as Cory Sidney Kipling of Scanterbury, Mb. Kipling has been charged with two counts of Impaired Driving Causing Death, three counts of Impaired Driving Cause Bodily Harm and one count of Possession of Stolen Property. A Warrant for Arrest that was previously issued for Kipling for Breach of Recognizance in an unrelated matter was also executed.
Kipling is being held in custody at the Winnipeg Remand Centre. He appeared in Winnipeg Court January 30, 2009 and has been remanded in custody until February 2, 2009.
RCMP Selkirk Detachment are continuing the investigation.
