On August 6, 2010, at approximately 5am, the Gimli RCMP Detachment were dispatched to a house fire in Winnipeg Beach.
Upon arrival, police found the residence engulfed in flames and learned that an occupant was still inside.
The body of 90-year-old Winnipeg Beach resident Patrick Gallagher was located inside the residence by local firefighters.
An autopsy was conducted on August 7, 2010, at the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg. The cause of death was determined to be due to smoke inhalation.
The investigation revealed the cause of the fire was arson and this matter is being investigated as a homicide. Several other residents in the area have also reported recent attempted arsons on their properties.
A 17-year-old youth was arrested, questioned and later released without charges.
