Abe Hiebert was first elected to Steinbach City Council in 2006.
“I have enjoyed serving on City Council the past four years,” says Hiebert. “It has been a pleasure to serve as Deputy Mayor this last year, and as chairman of the Steinbach Community Health Committee for the past two years.”
Hiebert brings a vast multitude of experience to the position of City Councillor. Besides, four years as City Councillor, Abe also served as a Councillor in the RM of Hanover for six years. He served on the Steinbach Credit Union Board for nine years and the Bethesda Hospital Board for eight years. Abe also has many years of business experience.
He is presently serving as a board member of the Haven Group and involved with the Seniors’ Fellowship Program at the SEMC.
Abe has been a part of many new projects in the City for the past four years.
“The council has accomplished much this last term,” says Abe. “I’m privileged to be part of a great team that has been involved in several major projects.”
A new fire hall, pump house, lagoon and landfill, Steinbach Community Plan and Zoning By-Laws as well as several infrastructure projects have been completed during the last four years.
Hiebert says he’s looking forward to continuing to improve the City of Steinbach in many different areas.
• Health Care: work with the SERHA and local Doctors regarding Steinbach residents’ health care needs
• Police Presence: build our police force to include a separate Crime Investigation Unit
• Planning: make use of the Public Forum to gather info from residents on their ideas for a long term city plan
• Recreation: free all day access to the Splash Park for parents and toddlers
• Infrastructure: improve and extend sidewalks, update sewer system and continue with paving projects
• Housing: assist in planning affordable housing and Senior housing
Hiebert believes that these goals can be accomplished and still keep Steinbach’s budget in line.
“There’s been a lot of talk of fiscal responsibility,” says Abe. “But it’s much more than that. Fiscal common sense is what we need to ensure that the residents of Steinbach continue to enjoy the best deal available.”
Hiebert says it is this approach to budgeting that has allowed Steinbach to have one of the lowest mill rates, taxes and per capita debt.
“I am very thankful for the great City of Steinbach and all the amenities we can enjoy,” says Hiebert. “We are fortunate that the councils before us had the foresight to improve the City yet they were still able to keep the taxes at a level so it is affordable for many to live here.”
Abe wants to use his experience, his vision and his fiscal common sense to ensure that the City can continue to implement improvements. Find out more at abehiebert.com.
