On October 2, 2010, at around 3am, Hamiota RCMP as well as local Emergency Services and EMS were dispatched to the scene of a single vehicle collision in Birtle, Manitoba.
Investigation revealed that a 1998 Chevrolet pick-up truck had been traveling eastbound on Highway 42, when it collided with the guard rail while crossing the Bird Tail River.
After the collision, the truck burst into flames, destroying the passenger compartment and front end of the vehicle.
The 25-year-old male driver from Birtle, Manitoba, and his 24-year-old female passenger from the RM of Oakland, Manitoba were able to escape from the vehicle before it was consumed by fire. They were transported to hospital by ambulance for treatment of non life threatening injuries.
There were no other vehicles or persons reported to be involved in this incident.
An RCMP Traffic Analyst attended to assist with the investigation. Alcohol and speed are considered to be factors at this time.
Police continue to investigate.
