On October 24, 2010, Winnipeg RCMP Major Crime Services were contacted by Children’s Hospital in Winnipeg regarding a critically injured 4 year old girl.
The girl had been transported by ambulance to hospital and was being treated for injuries sustained during a severe assault. The victim has since died in hospital as a result of her injuries.
The child’s 32-year-old mother, Mary Joana Belanger, has been arrested by RCMP and charged with second degree murder in relation to this incident.
Two other children, a 13-year-old girl and an 18-month-old boy who reside in the household have been apprehended by Child and Family Services. All are residents of Stuartburn, Manitoba.
Morris and Emerson RCMP Detachments are being assisted by Winnipeg Major Crime Services and Winnipeg Forensic Identification Section.
Mary Joana Belanger has been remanded in custody and is to appear in Provincial Court in Winnipeg on October 26, 2010.
Police continue to investigate.
