Manitoba’s plan for steady and strong economic growth has made the province a growth leader in Canada’s labour market over the past year, Entrepreneurship Training and Trade Minister Peter Bjornson announced.

According to a Statistics Canada labour force report released today, strong growth in labour force and employment, when coupled with the lowest unemployment rate, has made Manitoba a leader among the provinces.

“The report shows that Manitoba’s plan to stimulate the economy by investing in infrastructure to create jobs, expand education and training, and support research and innovation has led to steady and strong growth,” said Bjornson. “Manitoba’s smart investments are bringing continued prosperity as a job-creation leader among the provinces.”

According to Statistics Canada, Manitoba is performing above the Canadian average on several indicators. Other strengths include:

• In the past 12 months, 19,200 jobs have been created including 15,100 full-time jobs and 14,500 private-sector jobs.

• Manitoba’s unemployment rate is now the lowest in the country at 5.2 per cent. Youth unemployment now stands at 9.2 per cent, which is also the lowest rate in the country.

• Manitoba’s employment increased by a further 1,600 positions in October, bringing the total number employed to 625,300, which is a new all-time record.
