On November 20, 2010, at around 5:40am, members of the Steinbach RCMP attended to a house fire on Hazelwood Drive in the RM of La Broquerie.
When the members attended, local fire departments were on scene fighting the fire which had now consumed the residence. It was determined that a family of six lived in the residence. Three children along with their mother were able to get out of the residence without injuries. A fourth child had to be rescued from the basement by his father. The father and his 13-year-old son were able to get out of the residence, however both sustained serious injuries. Both were transported to a hospital in Winnipeg and are critical condition.
The Steinbach RCMP along with the Office of the Fire Commissioner are still investigating. At the present time the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
Update 11/21/10 1:21pm
RCMP have learned that shortly before noon today, the 36-year-old father succumbed to his injuries. His 13-year-old son’s status has not been provided today, as of yesterday, he was reported in critical condition.
The fire has been deemed not suspicious and electrical in nature.
