Through support from the Government of Canada, the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce will conduct a research study on youth participation in the local job market. The Honourable Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety and Member of Parliament for Provencher, made the announcement today on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development.
“For many young Canadians, making the transition to the job market is a challenge, especially in today’s environment,” said Minister Toews. “That’s why our government is ensuring that youth have opportunities to succeed through support for initiatives like the Steinbach Youth Employment Survey.”
With assistance from the federal Skills Link program, the Steinbach Chamber of Commerce will work with the Brandon University Centre for Aboriginal and Rural Education Studies (BU CARES) to conduct research identifying employment opportunities and barriers for local youth. The resulting report will provide recommendations on connecting youth with service providers and employers to increase youth employment rates.
Skills Link helps youth facing barriers to employment, such as single parents, Aboriginal youth, youth with disabilities, recent immigrants, youth living in rural and remote areas, and youth who have dropped out of high school.
The Steinbach Chamber of Commerce will receive over $30,000 in federal Skills Link funding to support its Steinbach Youth Employment Survey project.
