The communities of Falcon Lake and West Hawk, have joined forces with other local organizations, in a joint venture that will see a medical clinic constructed in Falcon Lake.
A public meeting was held in the community on January 9, where the main topic was how to maintain medical services within the area. Many organizations like the Whiteshell Community Club, the local Chamber of Commerce, and Manitoba Conservation stepped forward to become part of this important project.
Marge Duncan, Community Clinic committee member says that the chamber took on the project because of its impact to the community.
“We felt we needed to make it a chamber issue as having a doctor in our community is a definite asset,” explained Duncan. “It was unanimously agreed that we build a new structure in the community.”
The plan includes the construction of a new medical center in the town of Falcon Lake. It is expected to include three examination rooms, a waiting area and reception desk.
Dr. Richard Duval provides medical services the community and is planning to continue his practice from the new facility.
Currently during the summer months, Dr. Duval sees patients out of an office located in the mall but due to the lack of appropriate facilities in the winter, he now sees patients out of a local church office.
A blueprint has been made for a 28′ x 32′ facility with three examination rooms and a reception area.
The clinic will be available for Dr. Duval, plus any other health related service providers such as chiropractic, public health, flu shot clinics, etc. A preliminary estimate of the cost for this project is approximately $125,000.
To help see this project become a reality, the community will look for financial support from other local partners. The Whiteshell Community Club will issue tax deductible receipts for any donations toward the project.
Duncan noted that the organizations involved feel very positive about the project, and will work toward a Fall 2009 completion date.
The clinic services the entire South Whiteshell area including Falcon, West Hawk, Star, Caddy and Barren Lakes, RM of Reynolds areas such as East Braintree, Prawda and Hadashville and even patients from across the Ontario border.
Anyone who wishes to contribute to this community project is invited to send donations to South Whiteshell Medical Clinic, Box 39, Whiteshell P.P., West Hawk Lake MB R0E 2H0.
