On January 6, 2011, Ste. Rose du Lac RCMP were advised by the Frontier School Division that a school bus driver had been in possession of a handgun while operating a school bus.
RCMP report that the driver was in possession of the handgun while picking up students en route to the Rorketon School.
Investigation revealed that on Thursday morning, students being picked up for school had observed the bus driver to be in possession of a handgun. The students were dropped off at school without incident and the matter was reported to school officials who contacted police.
The school bus driver, a 52-year-old man from the RM of Lawrence was later arrested at his residence. A number of firearms were seized by police at this time.
The accused has been released from custody and is scheduled to appear in Dauphin Provincial Court on February 22, 2011. He is facing a number of firearm charges including unauthorized possession of a firearm in a motor vehicle and careless storage of a firearm.
There were no injuries reported as a result of this incident.
Police continue to investigate.
