The Canadian Wheat Board estimates 10 to 12 million acres could go unseeded across the prairies this year because of the relentless rains received over the last month.
The recent snow which has stalled harvesting activities across the prairies is expected to result in reduced grades in cereal crops still on the fields.
Ongoing optimism among Prairie farmers, buoyed by strong grain prices, is being challenged by serious concerns about the effect of this year’s weather on crops.
The market analysis division of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada has estimated seeded acreage and crop price levels for the upcoming crop year, says consultant Kevin Hursh.
