Amendments to the Public Schools Act and the Education Administration Act that will come into force November 1, 2009, will formalize the requirement that Manitoba school divisions have policies to protect students with life-threatening allergies, Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson announced.

Manitoba students and teachers returning to school and work this week are asked to do their part to maintain good health by taking precautions such as hand washing and covering up a sneeze or cough to avoid the spread of the H1N1 flu virus, Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson said today.

School principals and superintendents across the province have received updated H1N1 influenza information this week about infection prevention, vaccination and absenteeism, along with public health advice for ill children or staff, Health Minister Theresa Oswald and Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson announced.

Steinbach MLA, Kelvin Goertzen, says the release last week of a report indicating 450 schools in Manitoba contain asbestos, including several in the Hanover School Division, shouldn’t be cause for panic among parents or students but does point to the need for a long-term strategy to deal with asbestos in schools.

Healthy Living Minister Kerri Irvin-Ross and Education, Citizenship and Youth Minister Peter Bjornson today unveiled a new youth-helping-youth healthy-living project for 20 Manitoba schools, part of a $310,000 provincial commitment for three new initiatives to ensure more Manitobans have the opportunity to build healthy living into their daily lives.
